He Didn't Say a Word

I wrote the following poem a few years ago while I was in University; over the past week I have been reminded of the humble, silent submission of our Lord Jesus. His example of submission to the Father's will I continually fall short of, but daily may I ask for His help to transform this selfish heart into the likeness of His.

"He was oppressed and treated harshly, yet he never said a word. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. And as a sheep is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth." - Isaiah 53:7

He Didn’t Say a Word

My Jesus He did come,
To die for all our ill;
Speechless He did suffer,
Not by force but will.

He willingly humbled himself,
Becoming human; enduring our pain.
Rejected and despised,
Still He never defended His Good Name.

His punishment misunderstood,
Disgraced and Denied by His own;
His humility and suffering,
Not one could understand.

Why would any innocent man,
And the One to be the Messiah,
Willingly show weak submission
To a wicked and prideful people?

Yet He heeded not those who mocked Him,
Pleading instead, “Father, Forgive them.”
Though blinded, we crucified,
With eyes wide-open, He complied.

Oh to follow in His steps,
To abandon conceited complaint.
Could I ever silently submit,
To any suffering or pain?

I find myself protesting,
When any trial I beget.
Though I claim Him as my Lord,
His example I forget.

Now I ask thee Lord,
Please strengthen me in You,
To silently submit,
Any task You give to do.
